Savor Your Wine at SKIES

Wine Glass Sketch

Admire your glass of wine.

Hold the glass by the stem and tilt it against a white background.

Notice the color at the center and the rim—this can hint at age (younger wines tend to have more vibrant, uniform color; older wines may fade at the edges).

Also check clarity and “legs” (the streaks that form when you swirl), which can suggest alcohol level or body.

Man Smelling Wine

Yes—really put your nose into the glass.

Start with a quick sniff before swirling, then gently swirl and smell again.

Keep your mouth slightly open as you inhale—it helps you perceive more aromas.

Try short sniffs instead of one long inhale. Look for categories first (fruit, floral, spice, earth, oak) before getting specific (cherry vs. blackberry, vanilla vs. toast).

Drinking wine

Take a small sip and let it move across your entire mouth—

front, sides, and back of your tongue.

Some people lightly draw in air through their teeth (“slurping”)

to release more aromas—totally normal in tastings.

Notice structure:

  • Sweetness (is there residual sugar?)

  • Acidity (does your mouth water?)

  • Tannins (that drying, grippy feeling, especially in reds)

  • Body (light like water or fuller like milk?)

Then focus on the finish—how long the flavors linger.
